The Van Gogh Museum was the first museum in the world to exhibit famous paintings via Virtual Reality during Museumnacht 2015. None other than Van Gogh and Munch welcomed visitors into their bedroom! A production by Veejays.com (Ivo and Hunter) in collaboration with, among others, the Van Gogh Museum and Shosho.

More about this technique

You're looking at a beautiful painting, such as The Bedroom by Vincent van Gogh. What would it be like to step inside the painting and walk around it? Virtual Bedrooms makes that experience genuinely possible. Using a special 3D headset (Google Cardboard) combined with any smartphone and a dedicated app, the visitor enters a virtual reality.

How does Virtual Reality work?

A VR viewer turns your mobile phone into a personal 3D world. The app translates your movement and viewing direction into 3D imagery — interpreted by the headset — so you can look around a virtual space. Google made VR accessible to everyone for the first time with Google Cardboard, and sponsored our project. With a clever cardboard headset, an ordinary smartphone and the right app, you can create an unexpectedly good Virtual Reality experience.

Who came up with it?

Museums like the Van Gogh Museum love collaborating with artists who draw inspiration from classic masterworks. Vincent van Gogh himself was an innovator too — who are today's visual innovators? An obvious group: artists with projectors and screens. Veejays.com is the leading collective in this field in the Netherlands. So it's really no surprise that this particular group came up with a boundary-pushing Virtual Reality project for Museumnacht.
